The opportunity
Sales-tax compliance is a recurring, unavoidable tax that every operating business pays in time, anxiety, and risk. In Arizona, it takes the form of Transaction Privilege Tax (TPT) – a system complex enough that owners routinely overpay, underpay, or simply dread the deadline. The work is high-stakes, deeply repetitive, and almost perfectly suited to AI.
The pain
- Rates that never sit still. Tax rates shift constantly across roughly 150 Arizona jurisdictions, each with its own rules and business codes.
- Manual, error-prone filing. Small businesses reconcile point-of-sale data by hand, then hope the return is right – with penalties waiting if it isn’t.
- No room for mistakes. Compliance is non-optional and recurring. Get it wrong and the cost compounds month over month.
The wedge
We start where the pain is sharpest and the moat is deepest: Arizona TPT. It is hard enough that generic tax tools avoid it, and structured enough that an AI-native platform can own it end to end – ingesting transactions, applying the right rates per jurisdiction, surfacing what matters, and producing a filing the owner can trust. Winning a hard, specific market first builds the data, the credibility, and the engineering depth that a broad platform later stands on.
The vision
Arizona TPT is the beachhead, not the ceiling. The underlying engine – safe automation, isolated retrieval over sensitive financial data, and a self-healing data pipeline – generalizes to other states and other compliance burdens. The long-term goal is a compliance platform that expands jurisdiction by jurisdiction and obligation by obligation, with each new market reinforcing the last. The filing covers what our engineering systems accomplish – not the tax rules themselves – while our curated rule base, rate data, and models stay protected as trade secrets.
